 What are the Design Situations?
Solution Design Situations are used in design codes which are based on the Partial Material Factor Method, such as the Eurocodes. They are defined as 'sets of physical conditions representing the real conditions occurring during a certain time interval for which the design will demonstrate that relevant limit states are not exceeded'. This means that a structure should be designed for a number of different design situations, for example gravity loading, wind loading, blast loading and earthquake loading. The sets of physical conditions are different for each design situation, and this is reflected in the design by assigning different partial material factors for each.

When designing usign codes based on the Resistance Reduction Method, such as the ACI-318, the design situations do not have any numerical effect on the design.
