Shear wall forces are different between models created from SAP2000 and ETABS?
Solution
There is a difference in the way of calculation of the shear wall forces when importing SAP2000 models and ETABS models. When a SAP2000 model is imported, the shear wall forces are calculated by RC-PADD from the nodal forces at the bottom of the section. In contrast, ETABS calculates itself the shear wall (pier) forces which are imported directly to RC-PADD.
We have verified the algorithm of calculation of shear wall forces when importing SAP2000 models, the report of which is found in Verification Report #106. The RC-PADD algorithmn shows very good conformity with the theoretical solution. So is ETABS for design forces N (axial), V2 (shear) and M3 (in-plane bending). Design force M2 (out-of-plane bending) has shown a small yet acceptable discrepancy.
